10 Places for a Long Lunch on the Weekend

Nothing spells leisurely weekend like a long lunch. I don’t know about you but weekends are treasured times around our house. Finally there’s time to put your feet up, read the papers and be leisurely. And nothing says leisurely quite like a long lunch. I’m not necessarily talking about a decadent and boozy long lunch. Just a long lunch to relax, enjoy good company, admire a view perhaps and, of course, eat good food.

Being the spoilt ang moh that I am, I’ll often eat out on the weekends, a casual brunch followed by dinner on at least one weekend day is pretty much par for the course. Lunch is different though. If you’re going out for a long lunch you have to hold back in the morning, avoid the usual eggs or croissant, and wait until a lunch menu is in front of you and you can choose aaaaanything you like.

Salted & Hung for a brilliant brunch or long lunch

Yes I know I’ve written about it before. I’m mentioning Salted & Hung here though because, to me, it’s more like a lunch than a brunch. Each visit to Salted & Hung gets better for me. The food is grown up and it’s the perfect place for a casual but classy weekend lunch. Not only that but for all the food you want and two hours of free flow you’ll only pay $88++. And the food isn’t buffet style, it’s cooked freshly and brought piping hot to your table. And I’m serious when I say the food is top notch. You can read a full review of the weekend brunch (lunch) at Salted & Hung here.

Luke’s at The Heeren

I’ve been to lunch at Luke’s in The Heeren twice lately. I thought it was a bit excessive but every time I bite into one of their tenderloins I remember why I keep going back. And Luke’s for lunch is pretty damn good value, especially when you consider this is the BEST STEAK IN SINGAPORE. I’ve been saying it for years and I’m willing to argue the point. At lunch the tenderloin goes for $39++, served with salad and fries. It really is outstanding value.

FOC Sentosa

It took me a while to get down to FOC at Sentosa, but now that I have I’m a fan. The beach views and poolside vibe make the perfect setting for a long lunch. Tasty morsels of tapas ordered to share are the perfect way to enjoy a leisurely long weekend lunch. You can read my full review here.

Summerlong for river views

Eating down at Robertson Quay can be a fairly hit and miss affair. Whilst brunch options are fairly good, something a little more grown up is trickier to find. Summerlong opened back in May and whilst there were some service glitches along the way, things have improved in leaps and bounds. A recent long lunch with my Mum and Sister, visiting from Australia, firmly installed Summerlong as a great weekend option for a long lunch. We enjoyed a mix of individual dishes as well as a few shared items, and a bottle of Prosecco to celebrate having visitors in town. It was pretty much perfect. You can read a full review here.

The Quayside

Dempsey Cookhouse and Bar

The key is in the title really. The fact that you can sit and have a rather lovely long lunch, then if you want to make a day of it, kick on at the bar afterwards. Dempsey Cookhouse and Bar hasn’t been around long but the quality of food is first rate and the space they’ve created is stunning. You can read more here.

Pollen for the tranquility

Pollen is a standout for many reasons. Set amongst the green and lush surrounds of the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, Pollen is as unique as the garden you are sitting in. The added bonus of dining at Pollen is that you gain free entry into the gardens. It’s the perfect stroll after you’ve filled yourself up on their gorgeous food. It might not be the first thing that springs to mind but meat is a highlight here. Check out the ageing cuts in the upright fridge just off the main dining room if you don’t believe me. You can read a full review here.
Pollen
18 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore

Spago for the views

It’s not the inside setting at Spago that stands out, it’s the view as you look down to Gardens by the Bay from the back balcony. And sunset on the other side isn’t too bad either (just try to block out the swathes of people mingling in the pool!) Spago has two dining options, the casual option on the terrace, or a full on fine dining experience inside. Both are very good, depending what you’re in the mood for. You can read a full review here.

Bistecca

aldente orecchiettiBistecca is not the coolest option on this list. That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be considered as a long lunch destination. Especially if the weather’s cold outside, this little shophouse in Mohamed Sultan is the perfect place to escape for some great Italian food. Note that they’re in the process of moving next door so be sure to call ahead.

The greenest of all the entries here, Open Farm Community consistently wins for a chilled out, green space where you have the choice of eating indoors or out. Added to that, the many community events that are on over weekends always mean there is something to look at. Food is a nice range of healthy and hearty, and wines are reasonably priced too. Note that it’s upstairs you want to go to. Downstairs is very much not a long lunch venue. Upstairs though is tranquil, light filled and with a menu that offers diners some great individual choices, but for a group there are also superb sharing options. You can read a full review here.
