13 Ideas for Lunch on National Day

Lunch on National Day might just be the perfect solution to a hump day. National Day falls on a Wednesday this year, this coming Wednesday to be precise, which means we get a public holiday! Yay! Except that a public holiday on a Wednesday is not the most useful day to have off. What a Wednesday public holiday is good for is lunch!

As part of a bigger post coming soon, here are 12 great venues for you to think about for lunch on National Day. The thing about National Day is that whilst the main parade will take place in the late afternoon and evening, lunch time is still up for grabs. So grab your phone and book one of these babies.

Summerlong for National Day by the River

Summerlong at the newly opened Quayside area on Robertson Quay has just announced they’re open for National Day (they’re usually closed for lunch during the week). They’ll be open from 11am and whilst I’d recommend you reserve a table, they always keep room for walk-ins. A great place to sit by the river and enjoy their tapas and brunch options. You can read a full review here.

Spago for the views

Unbelievably you can still get a reservation for lunch (and dinner) on the Spago terrace for National Day (I’d hurry if you want to book!) Whilst you’ll be too early for much of the aerial show, the buzz will be fun and you can still celebrate having the day off.
Spago has two dining options, the casual option on the terrace, or a full on fine dining experience inside. Both are very good, depending what you’re in the mood for. Food is described as Californian which seems to include a bit of everything. Burgers, pasta, salads and seafood are all up for grabs. There are no seats available for the dining room in the evening, but there are spaces for lunch. And terrace seating is still available throughout the day. You can read a full review here.

Luke’s at Orchard for the steak

a close up of luke's tenderloin steakKill two birds with one stone and sit down to a very civilised lunch at Luke’s after a spot of shopping on Orchard Road. Luke’s still nails it for me with their pepper crusted tenderloin, I dream of it. And whilst the location inside Robinson’s sounds a bit odd, it works surprisingly well. You’re sitting pretty whilst the mayhem is happening below on Orchard Road. You can read a full review here.

Pollen at Gardens by the Bay

You’ll feel a million miles away from the mayhem at Marina Bay when you sit down to a lunch on National Day at Pollen. And since it’s a holiday, you’ll also get to take advantage of free entry to the gardens after your lunch. Steve Allen recently took over the kitchen at Pollen and you can expect a similar brand of bright, light vegetarian options as well as great cuts of meat. There’s something for everyone. Bistecca for a hideout

Another great option for steak, and also if the weather is a bit shit. Bistecca is a cosy Italian restaurant that consistently serves good food, with the beef cuts being a stand out. They also have a very good Sardinian red wine that’s remarkably reasonably priced. Perfect for a long lunch on National Day. You can read a full review here.

Dempsey Cookhouse and Bar

Part of the new new COMO lifestyle concept at Dempsey, the Cookhouse and Bar is a perfect setting to enjoy your relaxing day off. The food is international and the cooking is fresh and light. I loved a lunch I had there not long ago and can’t wait to get back. And after lunch you can grab a seat at the bar and while away the afternoon. You can read a full review here.

Open Farm Community

Another Dempsey choice for lunch. This time with an outdoor option and lots of greenery both inside and out. The vibe of OFC is chilled and service has improved a lot since they opened. The pasta with mushrooms and blue cheese I had here last time was fabulous. You can read a full review here.

Botanico for the gardens

I think one of my lasting memories of Singapore will always be the Botanic Gardens. They’re something special. So accessible, with so many different spaces, and so many areas where a trainer can inflict pain! Most of all though, they’re quite beautiful. The tranquility of being seated in a gorgeous black and white building, surrounded by lush greenery, brings instant calm. The food at Botanico isn’t bad, and it’s a lovely setting for lunch on National Day. You can read my full review here including my rant about the service!

SPRMRKT Kitchen and Bar

Robertson Quay can get a bit manic on any day, but lunch on National Day might just be a bit much for some. Escape the crowds and head upstairs to the SPRMRKT Kitchen and Bar. The space upstairs offers a lot more in terms of style and comfort than the downstairs cafe. The room is light and airy though so you can still feel like you’re part of the action. Food is also a notch up, with lots of good pasta, meat, fish and salad options. You can read a full review here.

House of AnLi

It might be in Tanglin Mall but if you happen to be there anyway on National Day then House of AnLi is a perfect lunch option. The space at this lovely cafe is bright and airy, and you’re at the back of the homewares shop of the same name. Food includes lots of healthy options but also a few more hearty dishes like their famous moussaka. Coffee is also excellent. You can read a more here.
Open for lunch reservations on National Day at 11.45am or 2pm, otherwise walk ins only

Bella Pasta and Pizza

Bella Pasta and Bella Pizza are an old faithful down at Robertson Quay. The food is consistently good Italian and their pizzas are some of the best on the island. You can read more here.

FOC Sentosa

I’m kind of cheating by putting this one in because I haven’t been here. But I have been to FOC in Hong Kong Street and Orchard, and I’m booked to go to Sentosa in a couple of weeks. The reason I’m including it is because I do love FOC’s Spanish food and Sentosa is a great place for lunch on National Day.
